All Elite Wrestling confirmed that Jon Moxley had signed a new five-year contract with the promotion on Friday, though it has since emerged that the reigning AEW World Champion had been working as a free agent prior to this.

PWInsider's Mike Johnson reported over the weekend that Moxley actually signed his new AEW deal around the time of All Out 2022, which took place on 4 September. Prior to this, Mox had been working on a "handshake agreement" after his previous deal had expired, though AEW was never concerned about him potentially signing elsewhere.

Dave Meltzer has corroborated that last point, reporting that Moxley wasn't interested in returning to WWE - nor was he interested in playing the two companies against each other in negotiations.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer also confirmed that Moxley had been a free agent for a while. He added that AEW was due to announce his renewal upon hitting Mox's Cleveland, Ohio hometown for the 18 October episode of Dynamite, but ultimately decided to bring it forward.

Moxley has been with AEW since May 2019, debuting at the inaugural Double Or Nothing pay-per-view.
