Mickie James will make her WWE return at the 2022 Royal Rumble on 29 January.

WWE announced a host of returning legends for the pay-per-view on Friday's edition of SmackDown. Others comeback queens of note include Lita, The Bella Twins, Michelle McCool, Summer Rae and Kelly Kelly. James, as the current reigning Impact Knockouts Champion, is the biggest surprise though.

Mickie is scheduled to defend that title against fellow ex-WWE alumni Deonna Purrazzo at Impact Wrestling's Hard To Kill show on Saturday night. The pair will work a brutal 'Texas Deathmatch' on the pay-per-view; now, some fans on social media are already wondering if James will drop the belt to Purrazzo and launch a full-time WWE comeback.

The Rumble spot could be a one-off, but who knows?

James was released amidst much controversy on 15 April 2021. Post-release, Mickie was very vocal about the fact she'd been sent some of her belongings in trash bags. That was poor PR for WWE, and became such a hot topic that James received a frank public apology from Stephanie McMahon.

This will be Mickie's first WWE match since competing in the 2021 Rumble.
