Nikki Cross' new superhero gimmick wasn't an overnight decision.

The Scot revealed on 'El Brunch de WWE' that she first came up with the idea to play the character way back at the Royal Rumble in January. There, Nikki worked approx seven minutes in the 30-woman match before being eliminated by Carmella.

That (largely forgettable) appearance planted a seed in Cross' brain - she decided to pitch a bold new direction to WWE higher-ups soon after. First though, Nikki had to flesh out her idea by building some lore.

She told interviewers on 'El Brunch de WWE' that it was her own childhood fondness for superhero cartoons like X-Men and Spider-Man that led to 'Nikki ASH' ('Almost A Superhero') becoming a reality. Cross also detailed the significance of her new butterfly logo, chirpy behaviour and never-say-die attitude.

For the record, the butterfly represents "a metamorphosis".

Nikki added that she's always found a healthy dose of "escapism" in superhero movies, comics and cartoons. She thought it'd be a neat idea to try marrying those hobbies with her pro wrestling career. That all started back at the Rumble.
