NXT Divas Paid More Than NXT Male Wrestlers
Money in NXT isn't as clear cut as you expected.
The women in NXT, as a general rule, are getting paid more than the male NXT wrestlers. Dave Meltzer reports in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the men tend to come from indie backgrounds and are willing to take a job based upon it being WWE. In contrast, the women often come from modelling backgrounds. WWE take the view that women need more money, in order to attain the type of look that the company desires. Meltzer's report is interesting, as it shows that pay discrepancies based upon sex can work both ways in the WWE. AJ Lee had complained earlier in the week that male wrestlers earn more than the women. That's definitely true on the main roster, but in NXT it is the women who are making the good money. Although, that would quickly change upon the NXT men and women attaining main roster promotion. It does make sense in some ways that the girls can demand more at the developmental level. A guy earning a few thousand dollars in the indies is going to be easily swayed to joining the WWE. But a beautiful girl can easily expect tens of thousands in certain modelling gigs. These are the type of girls that WWE primarily desire on their roster. Still, NXT's Charlotte and Sasha Banks were wrestlers and athletes before WWE. It isn't as if they were just signed based on looks. You also have to say that the likes of Adrian Neville, Hideo Itami and Finn Balor would not have been signed on the cheap. These men had full bookings on the indie scene and Japan. They would have been making good money.
