Wrestling fans are forever fascinated by the idea of a torch being passed. It’s not hard to see why; the shows never, ever end, even during the terrifying early days of a pandemic in which literally the only live entertainment available to watch was AEW or Aleister Black going 27 minutes with Apollo Crews in an empty gymnasium.

Naturally, fans grow bored of seeing the same wrestlers all the time. This is compounded by the fact that, with a far less arduous schedule in place these days in tandem with a more clean-living lifestyle, wrestlers do a Decade of Destruction run all the bloody time. Thus, when Brock Lesnar and Gunther exchanged a series of moves in the 2023 men’s Royal Rumble match, people ran away with the idea. In fairness to them, it was brilliantly done. Brock killed every other participant in the match, at least two times over, before Gunther squared up to him and blasted him with a chop. For a few electrifying seconds, it felt like you were watching a tease of a real dream match. You weren’t making it up in your head. WWE positioned Gunther as the one guy in the match that spooked Lesnar. Drew McIntyre was in there at the time, too. He might as well have still been in 3MB for how much stronger Gunther was booked.

So when was the match happening? WrestleMania? Nope, that was Omos. That was a Vince McMahon call. SummerSlam is when Gunther is going to chop Lesnar out of WWE for good.

Sadly, this put the fantasy in fantasy booking; Dave Meltzer put out a rumour killer in April 2013. And he was right.
