SmackDown wasn't originally WWE's big plan for Davey Boy Smith Jr, but plans change.

According to The Wrestling Observer, Davey Boy Smith Jr was supposed to land on NXT UK instead of SmackDown, but travel issues caused by the ongoing pandemic forced a change of plans for WWE.

Smith returned to the company and worked a dark match before last week's episode of SmackDown - that was his first in-ring WWE appearance for 10 years. Smith didn't follow that up with another go-around before, during or after this week's episode though.

The whole blue brand thing is last minute - that's why.

Smith was meant to feature as a focal point for WWE's UK wing this year. Dave Meltzer noted that the promotion had big things in mind for him, including lots of chatter about his father, The British Bulldog, and his family history in England.

None of that was feasible due to the COVID-19 outbreak, so WWE changed tact, played the long game and then stuck Davey Boy Jr on SmackDown in the short-term. The Observer's wording (they said NXT UK hadn't been workable "at that time") suggests that WWE remain interested in doing something over in the UK with Smith.
