Potential Spoilers For Huge WWE SummerSlam 2020 Match

Notes on WWE's creative direction heading into (and out of) SummerSlam.

Randy Orton defeating Drew McIntyre to become a 14-time WWE World Champion is currently on the ideas board for SummerSlam 2020.

Dave Meltzer writes about this in the new Wrestling Observer Newsletter, calling their bout a "significantly huge match as far as the future direction goes." He states that WWE has floated Orton beating McIntyre to build towards a huge title defence against Edge at WrestleMania 37, as while their rubber match doesn't necessarily need the gold, it would add extra stakes.

Some within the company have spoken up on Drew's behalf, arguing that WWE needs a newer star on top, not somebody who has been around as long as Orton.

Meltzer points out McIntyre's strong booking lately, with WWE going out of their way to keep him protected. Seth Rollins and Bobby Lashley also get a mention on this front. It is noted that while Drew has already gone through most of RAW's biggest heels, the upcoming WWE Draft will bring a shakeup, offering plenty of fresh match-ups.

McIntyre has been WWE Champion for 148 days at the time of writing. He defeated Brock Lesnar for the strap at WrestleMania 36 in April.
