Samoa Joe is on his way back to WWE, with the former NXT Champion set to assume a new role in NXT.

Fightful Select reported on 11 June that several black and gold brand personnel believed WWE was keen on bringing Joe back, adding that he had been at the Performance Center for unknown reasons earlier this week. The story continued yesterday, with the Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer reporting he'd been told Joe was coming back in a "[William] Regal-like role," emerging as the favourite to replace the Englishman as NXT General Manager.

This came following TakeOver: In Your House, on which Regal claimed it was "time for a change" after seven years as NXT's authority figure.

Now, Fightful Select has stated that Joe is indeed set for a WWE comeback - which is something Triple H pushed for. The report states that The Game wanted to get Joe back in NXT soon after he was released from WWE on 15 April, which now appears to be coming to fruition.

Per Fightful, NXT has put a plan together for Joe and it's open to expansion. PWInsider's Mike Johnson adds that while the big man may end up wrestling on NXT, non-wrestling duties will be his primary focus. Joe hasn't wrestled since February 2020, owing to concussion issues. He had served as a member of the Raw announce team prior to his WWE release.

Johnson states that Triple H, who helped bring Joe to WWE in the first place, "snatched him back" as soon as he could.
