Samoa Joe is set to defend his recently regained NXT Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura in Japan this weekend, but WWE are already looking towards Joe's next challenger.

Last night's NXT tapings saw a series of matches booked to determine a new number one contender, and it started with four qualifying matches. Tye Dillinger defeated Eric Young via DQ, Andrade "Cien" Almas beat No Way Jose, newcomer Roderick Strong defeated Elias Samson, and Bobby Roode overcame Oney Lorcan. The four winners progressed to a Fatal 4 Way Elimination match, and after eliminating Dillinger last, Roode earned the title shot.

The qualifying matches are set to air on December 14th, with the Fatal 4 Way set to be shown on December 21st. It's highly likely that Roode will challenge Joe for the NXT Championship at TakeOver: San Antonio, which takes place on January 28th during Royal Rumble weekend.

Joe's victory over Nakamura at TakeOver: Toronto caught many off-guard, but Roode becoming number one contender is hardly surprising. The former TNA Champion has fast become one of NXT's most popular acts, and taking Nakamura's place in the title scene could spell a main roster call-up for The King of Strong Style.
