Stephanie McMahon Reveals Early WWE Backstage Reaction To Becky Lynch's 'The Man' Moniker

Speaking recently to Digital Spy, WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon revealed that a number of stars were initially against former Raw and SmackDown Women's Champion Becky Lynch's 'The Man' moniker.

After losing a SmackDown Women's title triple threat at SummerSlam 2018, Becky Lynch finally snapped and began to morph into a new character which would soon become one of the most popular in WWE history.

However, not everyone was over the moon with her eventual decision to start referring to herself as 'The Man'.

Stephanie McMahon shed some light on the early backstage reaction to the Irish star's new nickname:

'(The Man) really was was her idea. It’s funny because some women were very against it like, ‘Why do you have to call yourself the man? Why can’t you be The Woman.'

Despite many feeling that her choice of title didn't make sense, Lynch didn't take it literally and McMahon alluded to her using it as a way to mark herself out as the most 'successful person in the room'.

'But she just didn’t take it, you know, too literally. The whole point was to turn that nomenclature on its ear, right, because everyone says, ‘oh the biggest, the most successful person in the room is The Man. Well, why can’t The Man be a woman.'

The gimmick instantly got over and Lynch went on to win the first ever Women's main event at WrestleMania 35, beating Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair to become both SmackDown and Raw Women's Champion.

During her conversation with Digital Spy, McMahon also noted that WWE were 'actively working on' getting more female writers in the writer's room.

'We do not have enough female writers in the writers room, we are actively working on that. There is a dedicated focus to how we tell our women’s storylines in the show, but we can always be better.'
