Given the bloat of modern WrestleManias, it takes a lot to whip up a crowd late on in a show. Few could have done the job better than Daniel Bryan and Kofi Kingston, the latter being the most deserving title winner at the show of shows since the former.

Bryan plays the arrogant heel to perfection, labelling Kingston a B+ player in an echo of the words used against him five years earlier. Few audiences have been more firmly behind a wrestler than the New Jersey crowd are behind Kingston here, but both athletes keep things unpredictable to the last.

The in-ring action is lightning fast and spotless, with Bryan’s technical style meshing brilliantly with Kingston’s high flying ability. Bryan, typically the underdog, plays the dominant, destructive force to great effect, making Kingston’s eventual triumph all the sweeter.

When Kingston gets the pinfall, it’s a feelgood moment to bring a tear to your eye as he celebrates in the ring with his New Day brethren and two young sons. Kofi’s title reign would come to a depressing end at the hands of Brock Lesnar, but he’ll always have WrestleMania 35, the highlight of an enviable career.
