Top WWE Star Wants To Dethrone Roman Reigns On UK PPV
This WWE wrestler wants to end Roman Reigns' long run at Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales.
The question of who will dethrone Roman Reigns as Undisputed WWE Universal Champion remains one of the biggest WWE must answer in the not-too-distant future, though one of the long-reigning SmackDown kingpin's current rivals has eyes on doing it in the United Kingdom.
Speaking with Sports Illustrated, Drew McIntyre revealed that he would like to take Reigns' two title belts away from him at Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales later this year. The Scot described this as a dream scenario:-
"I’m a two-time WWE champion, but I never won the title in front of our fans. My dream situation is fighting for the title against Roman at the UK show. There is going to be such intense anticipation for that event. That would be a match, atmosphere-wise, that people would always remember."
Taking place at the Principality Stadium on Saturday 3 September, Clash at the Castle will be WWE's first pay-per-view/premium live event in the United Kingdom since Insurrextion 2003, which was held in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England that June. Going back further, it is the promotion's first major stadium show in the country since SummerSlam 1992.
Understandably, given the length of time between now and Clash, WWE is yet to announce a single match for the Cardiff date. McIntyre has been linked to a marquee clash with heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury on the show. On this, he told SI the following:-
"If Tyson Fury steps back into the WWE ring, it’s not going to be as easy as he thinks. He showed last time in his match against Braun that he’s capable. No doubt, he’s an entertainer. But if he steps into the ring against me, he’s in for something he’s never experienced before."
Although he currently finds himself feuding with Reigns, McIntyre isn't scheduled to fight for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship anytime soon. A rumoured WrestleMania Backlash 2022 match was pivoted away in favour of a trios battle between The Bloodline and Drew and RK-Bro this Sunday (8 May).
It appears, for now, that WWE is saving McIntyre vs. Reigns for a bigger stage. Whether that stage will be Clash at the Castle remains to be seen. The company has two further stadium shows (Money in the Bank 2022 on 2 July, SummerSlam 2022 on 30 July) between now and then.
