Vince McMahon Pitched Charlotte Flair's NXT Title Tilt, Not Triple H
The Vin-man pays more attention to women's wrestling than you think...
During his regular post-NXT TakeOver media conference call, Triple H said that he had little to do with Charlotte Flair's NXT Title tilt. The USA Network didn't demand it as a means to boost the show's ratings on Wednesday night either.
It was all Vince McMahon.
McMahon viewed Flair's rivalry with NXT Women's Champion Rhea Ripley as an interesting way to turn the familiar NXT vs. "main roster" dynamic on its head. Instead of having Rhea appear on Raw or SmackDown to challenge champs like Becky Lynch or Bayley, the boss thought it'd be cool if Charlotte took the fight to NXT as well.
This booking idea simultaneously gave NXT some more star power, handed Flair a marquee match at WrestleMania 36 and enhanced the notion that Ripley is a dominant champion everyone wants to beat.
It's surprising to learn that Triple H didn't come up with the plan. It's also slightly shocking to hear that Vince paid so much attention to NXT's female division and wanted to give the brand a little rub.
Flair challenging Ripley for the NXT Women's Title has officially been announced for 'Mania.
