Why WWE Cancelled These 2 SummerSlam 2019 Matches
WWE's SummerSlam card has seen some major changes.
Two matches originally intended for this Sunday's SummerSlam 2019 pay-per-view went down on WWE Raw and SmackDown this week.
The first was the Women's Tag Team Championships four-way bout pitting champions The IIconics against Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose, Nikki Cross and Alexa Bliss, and The Kabuki Warriors. Bliss and Cross seized the belts on Raw, though the moment was supposed to happen on pay-per-view.
SmackDown saw another card alteration, with Sami Zayn battle Aleister Black in a short, decisive midcard bout, from which the Dutch striker emerged victorious.
Per Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, Zayn vs. Black was just a textbook WWE last-minute reshuffle. The Women's Tag Team Title bout, however, was down to Paul Heyman, who felt that Raw would allow the performers a longer match, therefore giving them more of an opportunity to showcase their skills.
SummerSlam's current match count sits at 10, though Meltzer notes that Drew McIntyre vs. Cedric Alexander will be added to the lineup sometime soon. This is surprisingly small for one of the year's shows, particularly as Goldberg vs. Dolph Ziggler is unlikely to last longer than a few seconds, but it's definitely welcome.
