8. The Reign Of Terror Begins On RAW

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xzDFQQQVPc We kind of covered this one in the title unification piece, but when the brand extension came down in 2002, the original idea for RAW was that the Intercontinental title would be the #1 belt, held by HHH. To facilitate this, the belt was merged with the Hardcore title and then the European title to get rid of the various sub-secondary titles clogging up the show...and then HHH changed his mind. Balking at the idea of people thinking of him as merely the IC champion while Brock Lesnar was the WWE champion, HHH had the World Heavyweight title created instead, so both champions could be equal. And then he beat Rob Van Dam anyway. Also, with that pesky Intercontinental title still floating around, people might not realize that he was in fact the greatest wrestler on earth, so he beat Kane at No Mercy 2002 to unify that belt into his World title as well. And then after he lost the belt to Shawn Michaels for a month and regained it, a pattern began to emerge...
