Rey Mysterio has had an amazing career, but a string of health problems from his high flying style combined with his age have made us all come to terms with the fact that the masked luchador will probably be wrapping up his career soon. So how should Mysterio ride off into the sunset(flip)? What fitting way can you say goodbye to a sure-fire hall of famer, who has had amazing matches with people of all styles, shapes, and sizes over the last couple of decades? Well, that's why I'm here to present 3 ways to say goodbye to Mysterio. Let me preface by saying, since this is my post, that these will be 3 awesome ideas which I think are awesome, and in no way are meant to be realistic ideas the WWE will choose. These are more pipe dreams than anything, and I am ok with that. Without further adieu, I present to you 3 awesome ways to say goodbye to Rey Mysterio.
3. Leave The Mask In The Ring
I got this idea from watching UFC and Olympic wrestling. I remember watching Rulon Gardner win the gold medal for the US, and afterwards he retired from wrestling by taking his boots off and leaving them in the ring. The first time Randy Couture retired, I remember him doing a similar thing with his shoes in the middle of the octagon at a UFC pay per view. So I've been thinking, why not do the same thing with Rey Mysterio? Mysterio is a legend, and WWE has proven they have trouble using legends to put over new talent, preferring to instead capitalize on the nostalgia factor. So rather than risk Mysterio's health on another feud or big match, why not let Mysterio ride off with his head held high and leaving behind a legacy of luchador greatness? They can have a big Rey Mysterio appreciation night/retirement ceremony/etc and instead of having the big heel swerve/ruin the moment type ending to one of those nights like they usually do with these things, they can instead truly appreciate Rey Mysterio. Imagine how surprising it would be to actually have one of the nights end the way it is intended to end. You can bring in a few people for one night only, such as some of the old luchadors (any who aren't in jail, or too inebriated to show up) and truly honor and appreciate Rey Mysterio for all the work that he has done over the years. Then, at the end of the night Rey can finally take the mic, give a heartfelt retirement speech, and then he can reach up and pull off the mask and leave it laying in the middle of the ring. I think this is a fantastic way to end Rey's career. The WWE would probably never go this route, but I think it is a wonderful way to honor a wonderful wrestler.
