WWE: 8 Most Shocking Results In Extreme Rules History

7. CM Punk Defeats Jeff Hardy For The World Championship - Extreme Rules 2009

Unbelievably, just moments after Hardy had defeated Edge for the title at Extreme Rules 2009, CM Punk came down to the ring with the Money In The Bank briefcase he had won at WrestleMania 25. Hardy looked on in shock, Punk was cashing in his title shot, against a man who had just competed for 20 minutes in a hurt filled ladder match. This underhanded tactic served to turn Punk heel, Hardy could barely stand, the audience were stunned at the turn of events. A shock within the shock was that Hardy actually managed to kick out of a GTS Punk used. The under siege star then managed to wrap up Punk in an inside cradle pin. Would the new Champion actually survive the cash in attempt? No, Punk resolved to get his shoulder up, recovering to hit a kick to the head and another GTS. This time it was enough, Punk won the 1-2-3, making him the new Champion. It was a result nobody could have expected at the start of Extreme Rules 2009, first Hardy dethrones Edge for the title, then CM Punk shocks the world by cashing in 'money in the bank' to defeat Hardy. As the new heel champion and with Hardy a sympathetic babyface, Punk vs Hardy went on to be the feud of the summer.
