WWE Ending Rusev Vs. Swagger Storyline?
No promo by Rusev and Lana this week on Raw.
At Sunday's WWE Battleground PPV there was a somewhat controversial promo that Lana did before Rusev's match with Jack Swagger where she mentioned "current events" that upset people. It was clearly a reference to the Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 that saw 298 people die after a missile attack by the Ukraine/Russia border. We reported on the story multiple times and several major news outlets around the world like the Daily Mail and Washington Post reported on it. Some people were outraged by it. Others just realized it was part of a wrestling storyline. On Monday afternoon WWE felt like they should say something about it, so they released this statement: "Last night's segment during WWE's Battleground event was in no way referring to the Malaysia Airlines tragedy. The storyline with characters Rusev and Lana has been a part of WWE programming for more than 3 months. WWE apologizes to anyone who misunderstood last night's segment and was offended." Heading into Raw, there were questions about how WWE might handle it. Rusev went into the ring with Lana and it looked like she was ready to do a promo. Just as she was about to speak, The Great Khali's music started and he made his way to the ring for a match. It was short match that Rusev won with the Accolade after about two minutes, which is like how most Rusev matches have been. It was probably not an accident that they had a non-American face Rusev this week. No USA chants from the crowd. There was nothing about any kind of national rivalry. The explanation for Swagger missing Raw was because he was hurt during their Battleground match. Rusev threw him into the ring post and then put him in the Accolade submission hold. While it is not confirmed at this point, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer Radio at F4WOnline.com commented that the Rusev/Swagger story may be finished. Based on the Battleground countout finish, it appeared as though there would be another match between Rusev & Swagger at SummerSlam. Maybe it's still going to happen. It could have simply been a case of Swagger selling the injuries and that he's going to be back on Smackdown or Raw next week. My feeling is that WWE could still do that Swagger story and either keep going in the same direction or tone it down a bit. There was also a rumor about a month ago that Big Show would be brought back soon to feud with Rusev so maybe they will go in that direction. Rusev is advertised for a match against Sheamus on Main Event this Tuesday. Perhaps they could have a feud with Rusev winning the US Title. There are a lot of ways the Rusev story could go, but it doesn't look like WWE is going to stop his character any time soon. It's something we will definitely be keeping our eye on in the weeks ahead.
