Santos Escobar finally turned heel on Rey Mysterio by attacking his LWO cohort on this week's episode of SmackDown.

This has been simmering in the background for a good while now, and some figured WWE would even wait until the new year to start powering towards a WrestleMania XL showdown between the frosty stablemates. Maybe that's still the plan, but things got moving on Friday night.

Carlito blamed Escobar for Rey's United States Title loss to Logan Paul at Crown Jewel. Then, Santos watched on without helping as Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits kicked his apple-spitting "ally" around. Mysterio wasn't thrilled about that, which fed into Escobar attacking Rey from behind.

A brief exchange followed, and Mysterio appeared remorseful for fighting back against his friend. That's when Santos went full-on Batista by destroying his mentor and leaving Rey prone. Other members of the LWO, including Zelina Vega, were in floods of tears over the split.

It'll be fun to find out what Triple H has up his sleeves for Escobar between now-WrestleMania season. Could he emerge as a candidate to win the men's Royal Rumble match? Stranger things have happened.
