A brutal and chaotic brawl fought between the two biggest megastars in US wrestling history at their peak, taken in by a molten crowd, this was a superbly-crafted tale of both respect and hatred. Rock and Austin borrowed one another’s finishers, but bloodied one another’s faces in a pulsating battle to the finish.

Even that finish, regarded as the death knell of the boom, was performed with such malice and horror that it remains a triumph, even in pyrrhic victory.
