This release must've come as a shocker to some on WWE's creative team.

PWInsider claims that WWE had some pretty major plans for Marina Shafir before cutting her loose on Friday night.

Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler's old pal had been training hard at the Performance Center, and she was reportedly gearing up for a spot on cards sooner rather than later. The site even reported that Marina was in line for a name change - WWE's creative team had been going back and forth on new monikers for Shafir.

Then, those at the top of the food chain made the call to cut her loose.

That must've come as a bit of a surprise to some on the creative team. They'd been asked to start thinking of fresh plans for Marina, after all. Who knows what changed and exactly when, but somebody in power decided that it wasn't going to work out anyway.

Shafir was just one of many WWE releases on Friday. She was joined by names like Killian Dain, Breezango, The Bollywood Boyz, Arturo Ruas, Curt Stallion, Ever-Rise, Tony Nese, Ariya Daivari, August Grey and Tino Sabbatelli.

Perhaps Marina will share abandoned pitches for her WWE run in due course.
