WWE: Hulk Hogan Discusses Relationship With Randy Savage

The relationship between Hulk Hogan and the late "Macho Man" Randy Savage was always one that would be considered rocky at best. There were many stories over the years about the two of them being angry with each other for a long time while they were working together and then they became buddies again. Once Savage was out of wrestling, it seemed as though the two were not friendly with each other. Savage even ripped on a song called "Be a Man" where he basically challenged Hogan to fight him legitimately. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG7jTAGliyY Now that Hogan is back in WWE, he decided to speak about Savage and squash the rumors that they had issues with each other. Hogan spoke candidly about the Macho Man in an interview with WWE.com.
We ran into each other at a doctor's office. I was on my seventh or eighth back surgery, and I couldn't pass an EKG because I was getting just jammed up with anesthesia every three or four months. They couldn't get my back right. My back was collapsing and they were telling my new wife Jennifer I'd never walk again and all of this craziness. Jennifer and I were sitting on those little seats in the doctor's office in Tampa and all of a sudden the door opens and in comes Randy. "Yeeeah! Ooooh yeah! What's up?" I went, "." Freaked me out, scared me to death. And he goes, "Hey, brother. What's up, Hogan?" He had that gleam in his eye and looked really healthy. He gained his weight back and he had a wedding ring on. I said, "Hey, Mach, what's up with the ring?" He said, "Hey, just married my childhood sweetheart."
Hogan mentioned that the reconciliation took place about three or four months before Savage passed away due to a heart attack at the age of 58 in May of 2011.
We talked on the phone a couple of times. I invited him over to have a barbeque, and really got back on track, which was cool. Later, I was with Lanny, his brother, at an independent wrestling show. He told me their mom wasn't doing so well with Angelo passing away. So we had planned on having a barbeque at her house €” because I got along well with Randy's mom €” and try to cheer her up. So, Lanny and I called Randy from the arena. Three days later, he had the heart attack. It was crazy.
Hogan also spoke about how difficult it was just to talk about his friend Savage: "Out of all the guys who have passed away, that's the tough one for me. Because he was a great person." Whether you like Hogan or not, it's nice to know that he was able to mend his relationship with Savage and that the two legends were friends before Savage passed away. When Savage died, most of the memories that fans had of him involved Hogan because of their time teaming together as the Megapowers and also their huge match at WrestleMania 5. Later in their careers, they were instrumental in the growth of WCW as a company that was able to surpass WWE in the mid 90s. Hogan was the bigger star of the two, but Savage was the better all around performer that influenced so many people over the years. Savage is the best wrestler that is not in the WWE Hall of Fame. Until he's in there it will always feel incomplete.
