When WWE revealed that they would be bringing back Payback for the week after SummerSlam, eyebrows were understandably raised. After all, why would you immediately follow up the second-biggest event of the year with a B-PPV that would have no time to craft its own storylines?
Nonetheless, Payback returned to screens on Sunday night and, all things considered, it actually proved to be a pleasant surprise. It wasn’t a perfect show by any means, but it did have some entertaining matches, bold character developments and it never really suffered from any under-planning.
By the time the curtain came down on the show, Keith Lee’s debut left audiences impressed while Shayna Baszler’s innovative submission hold did the same. And then there’s Roman Reigns - who finally divided the WWE Universe for the right reasons when he returned to the ring in the Universal Championship match.
