10 Batmen Who Aren't Bruce Wayne

4. James Gordon - Superheavy

Flashpoint Batman Thomas Wayne
DC Comics

This time its Bruce's oldest ally, James Gordon, taking his place. You might think that Gordon is too old and frail for the burden and you might be right if his batsuit didn't look like it was designed by Tony Stark. While some may doubt Jim's ability, no one doubts it more than himself. He has trouble feeling like he's living up to his predecessor.

Gordon's Batman is not only different from Bruce because he wears a 10-foot mech-suit provided by the Powers Corporation but also in that he isn't a vigilante. He operates only when the GCPD calls him in.

Commissioner Gordon's always been a man of the law first and foremost but he begins to realize that Batman has to be something more, an independent force. He does what he feels he must.

Gordon is effectively fired as Batman and is set to be replaced. At the fundraiser where Gordon was meant to resign, this arcs big-bad strikes. While preparing their counter attack, its revealed that not only is Gordon replaceable, Powers has a virtual army of Bats-Mechs at their disposal.

This is pretty much the end of Gordon's stint as The Bat. Bruce returns to being Gotham's guardian but Gordon's time as Batman is important. It shows him, and us, that Batman isn't a sense of security brought about by a greater power. We cant always rely on Batman to save us. He helps us find the strength to rely on ourselves in the absence of security.
