10 Batmen Who Aren't Bruce Wayne
3. Terry McGinnis - Batman Beyond
Terry didn't originate in a comic but the animated show Batman Beyond, taking place in the future of the DC animated universe. His story has continued in comics on and off since the shows cancellation in 2001 however, with him now existing in the main DCU.
Terry becomes a retired Bruce's successor after stumbling upon the Batcave. Terrys father is murdered by the Jokerz (a street gang inspired by the ostensibly dead Joker's legacy) and he seeks out Bruce's help in avenging his father. Bruce recognizes a fire in Terry that was seen in himself many decades ago when he made his solemn promise to honor his parents legacy.
Mentored by Bruce and equipped with a technologically advanced Batsuit, Our new Batman sets off seeking retribution for the death of his father and becomes the new capeless crusader of Neo-Gotham.
Throughout the series Terry comes to own the mantle of the Batman, not a lesser substitute for Bruce but a full fledged Batman for a new age, in some ways surpassing his predecessor. He takes on villains either from or inspired by Bruce's time as The Bat, as well as amassing his own rogues' gallery.
At the conclusion of the animated series its revealed that Terry is not only Bruce's apprentice but his biological son. Regardless of his parentage Terry had already proven himself time and time again as being worthy to be his city's protector, making this revelation somewhat inconsequential. Terry McGinnis is Batman.
