10 Comics Characters You Didn’t Know Were Rip-Offs

5. Spawn (Venom)

Spawn isn't the most famous superhero, but for awhile, back in the nineties, he was.

He's a dead man who came back from hell as a demon, covered in black living goo that he could form into weapons. He had a movie in the nineties (that was terrible), an HBO cartoon (that was okay), and has had hundreds of issues of comics (quality varies). Next year, he'll be getting another movie (maybe not terrible), which is pretty hilarious because Spider-Man's archenemy Venom (imagine Spider-Man, but edgy), is also getting a movie soon, and they're the same character.

Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, started out at Marvel. His most famous design was Venom, the symbiote creature covered in black goo that could turn into a living weapon.

McFarlane left Marvel to create his own company - Image, the company behind The Walking Dead, Saga, and every non-superhero comic you know of. One of McFarlane's first creations for Image was Spawn, who is Venom, but even edgier. Those designs don't look similar for nothing.
