10 Embarrassing Supervillains Marvel Wants You To Forget
Marvel presents... Asbestos Lady?!
Over the course of its nearly 80 year history, Marvel Comics has given the world some of the greatest and most iconic comic book characters of all time. While most think of their superheroes... and there are many, the writers and artists at the House of Ideas have created some memorable supervillains over the years to help make their heroes more interesting.
Superheroes like Spider-Man and Captain America have faced off against the likes of the Red Skull and Doctor Octopus, but not all supervillains are necessarily super. Some may be mediocre while others are overpowered psychopaths, but there are some who just didn't make it as well as the rest.
Every now and again, the publisher throws out a supervillain they might prefer remained lost to history.
Whether they fell within the realm of cultural insensitivity or were simply ridiculous, there are more than a few supervillains Marvel would prefer you forgot.
10. The Matador
The Matador is a character created by Stan Lee and Wally Wood for Daredevil back in 1964, but he isn't the most thought out supervillain Stan Lee ever created.
Manuel Eloganto was once the most famous bull fighter in all of Spain, but the crowd soured on him thanks to his overt cruelty he showed the bulls. During his final performance, a riot broke out and he was severely injured, but eventually recovered. He swore vengeance upon all mankind because they didn't tolerate him - y'know, the usual supervillain excuse.
As The Matador, Eloganto embraced a life of crime and villainy thanks to his skills as a swordfighter and bullfighting abilities... which somehow made him a threat to the likes of Matt Murdock...?
In many ways, this was little more than a silly supervillain with a ridiculous story, but it was also culturally appropriative and a negative depiction of Spanish people. The character was almost universally disliked, which is why it's likely you never heard of him before now.
