10 Greatest Marvel Comics Of The 21st Century

1. Astonishing X-Men (2004)

Marvel Comics

Following the success of the early X-Men movies, the comics were changed to reflect the films' aesthetic. Having arguably comics' most colorful and diverse team wear black leather and step away from heroics was not in the X-Men's best interest. Joss Whedon's run on Astonishing X-Men brought the characters back to being costumed superheroes that go on fantastical adventures.

People who want to get into comics always ask where to start, and the simple answer is with Astonishing X-Men. The story moves along at a quick pace with engaging dialogue and artist John Cassaday stands out as the definitive X-Men artist of the 21st century.

The run lasted for 24 issues plus a Giant Sized Annual and tells a sprawling epic that still affects the X-Men comics to this day. The story focuses on a small team of X-Men, primarily centering on Kitty Pryde. The X-Men deal with new villains, running the school in Xavier's absence, have a hero return from the dead, and have to go to space to stop a prophecy of one of the X-Men destroying a planet.

This comic became an instant classic as soon as it came out. Without a doubt, Astonishing X-Men stands out as the best Marvel comic since the turn of the century.
