10 Greatest Marvel Comics Of The 21st Century

2. Daredevil (2006)

Planet Hulk
Marvel Comics

For years, there was only one name that people would point to when it came to the best Daredevil stories: Frank Miller. Then Ed Brubaker got his hands on the character and delivered the best modern Daredevil run to date that rivals Miller's work on the character.

Brubaker was on Daredevil from issue #82 -119 and the #500 special. The story opens with Matt Murdock in jail after he has been outed as Daredevil to the public. The run features the majority of Daredevil's rogues gallery and forces Matt to be constantly fighting his way out of a corner. The story as a whole delivers some emotionally devastating scenes, but has plenty of heartfelt ones to help balance out how gritty this run of comics is.

At his core, Daredevil is a hard boiled character, and one that deals with the dichotomy of being a vigilante and a lawyer through his Catholic faith. Brubaker pushes every aspect of Matt Murdock's character to the breaking point. Everything that happens in this run should have Matt cross the line and become a villain, but he rises above whatever is thrown at him.

This arc would be nothing without an artist that could match the tone of the story. Michael Lark makes Hell's Kitchen feel lived in with a grimy aesthetic, along with delivering the brutal action that Daredevil is known for. This run on Daredevil masterfully shows how to bring a character back to what makes them engaging. This may very well be the strongest Daredevil story of all time.
