10 Misconceptions You Have About Working In The Comics Industry

Not everybody will become Stan Lee...

Stan Lee Spider Man We'll let you in on a little secret here, readers: we didn't always dream of becoming a phenomenally successful pop culture commentary website (with over 55 million page views a month!). Truthfully, once upon a time we hoped we might create the very culture we now obsessively pick over, to put something into the world rather than simply being professional appreciators. That idea got nipped in the bud when we began reading interviews with the people we idolised, realised we didn't have the drive that they thought necessary to succeed in creative industries, and also because we totally failed GCSE Art and thus probably weren't going to end up drawing Spider-Man one day. That was just our first exposure to the harsh realities of what working in the comic book industry is really like. Even now we have a glossed, unrealistic conception of what putting out funnybooks must entail, and the sort of people who do it. Those preconceived notions are just that: notions. They have no basis in reality, and no bearing on what the day-to-day life of a comics industry professional is like. Most of us don't really have any idea how the sausage is made. Well, today we're here to show you our sausage. Erm, to show you the sausage of comics professionals. No, that's not quite right either. Today, we're going to take you through every hidden, unexplored and unknown part of the comics industry to you, to explode any myths you may believe in, and to give you a very real, working knowledge of just what goes into making a single issue of Wonder Woman. Like our brilliant list on videogames, we're going to go through ten of the most common misconceptions that people in the comics industry face, and how you can stop from putting your foot in your mouth next time you somehow end up talking to one, ya dweeb. (Note: We are also dweebs. All in this together!)
