The comic book industry is bringing in more money than ever. With more titles than ever before being released on a monthly basis, research in 2012 said that the amount of money spent per month on the top 300 comic book titles came to $248.44 million. In the age of the big budget comic book movie, the paperback source material that those movies are based on still sells like hotcakes. Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, the X-Men - they're all still immensely popular characters and there are thousands of other characters who have regular ongoing arcs that regular readers fall over themselves to get their hands on upon their release. That said, in the grand scheme of things, only a small percentage of the world's population are familiar with comic books and an even smaller percentage read them on a regular basis - and not even those who do read them are still prepared to admit that they do.
