Unfortunately, the majority of comic book characters were created in a period where it would have been seen as taboo for a book to have a female or non-white as the lead. Since then, Marvel has created and introduced a lot of great superheroes and supporting players who have brought diversity to the medium, but they've taken a bizarre approach to that in recent years. Rather than making them great in their own right, someone like The Falcon is given the identity belonging to a more popular character. There's nothing wrong with Captain America being black of course, but why isn't making The Falcon a character who can carry his own series in the role he's best known for a priority? The mantle of Thor being passed to a woman has actually made for a great tale, but the reveal again shows an unnecessary reliance on focusing more on recognisable brands than characters. Meanwhile, fans hoping to follow the adventures of superheroes like Steve Rogers (who they've followed for decades) are left without that option. Enjoyed Avengers: Age Of Ultron and want to see more of Captain America in action? Tough, he's actually an OAP now...
