10 Ways Marvel Are Ruining Comics

9. Character Assassinations

With decades of history behind them, Marvel obviously can't keep telling the same old stories, but the way they treat some characters is downright shocking and disrespectful. Nick Fury has been a staple of the Marvel Universe since the very start, and while removing him as the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. did open the door to some interesting new stories, the decision to reveal that he was actually a genocidal alien assassin responsible for murdering The Watcher was baffling. Throw in the fact that he was turned into an old man and then clad in chains and transformed into "The Unseen" and the character is just ruined. There's nothing left of him, and instead of character development, this is character assassination. Cyclops has also been a victim of this. Since Avengers vs. X-Men, he's been portrayed as an unhinged fanatic on the path to becoming Magneto. That had the potential to be a great story in the right hands, but was so rushed that it's just not believable. Moments like those above exist only to shock fans in the short term, but have very little long term ramifications other than a character being wasted until someone can do a retcon.
