5 Massive MCU Mysteries That Were Answered In The Comics

5. How Did Hydra End Up With The Sceptre In Avengers: Age Of Ultron?

Marvel Studios

So, a fair few people were justifiably confused at the start of Age of Ultron, which saw The Avengers on a mission to recover Loki’s sceptre. The confusing part is that we had assumed S.H.I.E.L.D had recovered the Sceptre after the battle of New York, surely they wouldn’t be dumb enough to just leave an immensely powerful artifact on top of Stark Tower for anyone to take?

Well, this little plot hole was answered in Marvel’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron Prelude - This Sceptred Isle. Actually, they did recover the sceptre, and it was held by S.H.I.E.L.D. However, the scientist in charge of investigating the sceptre’s powers, Mark Smith, abhors his position in S.H.I.E.L.D, and betrays them to Hydra, taking the sceptre and killing fellow scientist Nicholas Cooper in the process.

From there, Smith hands the sceptre over to Hydra in war torn Sokovia, who begin testing its powers on two young volunteers: Pietro and Wanda Maximoff. This then leads to the birth of Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch, and the assault on Hydra's base at the beginning of Age of Ultron.
