Silk Spectre #3 kicks off right where #2 left us. Laurie unintentionally taking some acid. What this leads to is Amanda Conners artwork running wild as panels stretch, visuals get weirder and we begin to delve into Lauries issues. Whats involved in this trip is a blast. Talking cats and Laurie's thoughts on the world around her is one thing but when she starts to talk about the Blue guy and her daddy issues its a good arena to play in for this Before Watchmen title. Despite the turn for the worst at the end of the trip, this wasnt the terrible experience we thought it might be for Laurie, well, until it turns out current love of her life Greg has had a nasty trip and winds up in hospital. This is where the Before of Before Watchmen comes in. The drive to get Laurie as a fully functioning crime fighter is what this miniseries is all about at this stage. She gets her thigh high boots and shes away to fight the drug lords who are dosing up teens to spend their money on stuff. I have to say that my love of Silk Spectre kicking ass has not lessened since last month. Amanda Connor draws her character in such delightful ways and the fight sequence is so much fun to see play out. Ive said it before but out of all of the Before Watchmen run, its Silk Spectre that I would happily read as an ongoing, theres something that feels like it has places to go that isnt restricted due to the events in the original Watchmen and with Darwyn Cooke and Amanda Conner leading the way, theres so much to love about this take on Silk Spectre. Anyway, as the drug problem continues to grow across many of the Before Watchmen titles, theres bound to be a bit of a crossover and in the final act of this issue we get to see The Comedian and how hes played a part in his daughters life without her really knowing it. This is a sad situation for Laurie and one that carries on the themes of bad parenting in our Watchmen origin tales. Sure The Comedians intentions seem pure enough but given what we know of the full picture this could very well spark the beginnings of the bitter Laurie Jupiter we know and love (but not as much as this young fun one).
