Pennyworth Trailer Reactions: 5 Ups & 1 Down

Ups...

5. It's Nothing Like Gotham

Batman prequels seem to be all the rage now.

The decision to not only commission an Alfred origin story, but to air it just over three months after the last Batman prequel came to an end, was questionable at best. After all, Alfred played a major role in Gotham (with Sean Pertwee portraying him magnificently), so what could possibly set Pennyworth far enough apart from it to ensure potential viewers that it's something entirely new?

Well they've only gone and set it in lovely old London, haven't they?

That's right, from the setting and the supporting characters to the sights and the villain herself, everything about Pennyworth is unapologetically British. This immediately sets it apart from its predecessor as it comes off more like one of those wonderfully gritty British crime dramas than the supernatural circus that Gotham was - and that is undoubtedly a good thing.

As it stands, Pennyworth looks like it shares a few things in common with Marvel's Agent Carter in that it could end up being a standalone espionage thriller that just so happens to take place under the superhero bracket. With that in mind, let's hope it sticks to the realism because it doesn't need anything else right now.
