Johnny Depp was barely into his film career when he played Lerner in Oliver Stone's Platoon. It was only his third film credit, but even then, the actor was putting everything he possibly could into his role. This is a guy who's known for delving deep into his performances, and Platoon was no different.

You may be aware that all the actors were put through a form of boot camp to prepare for their roles as soldiers, but that's not the level of preparation we're talking about here. Depp's role required that he speak a few phrases in Vietnamese, and to make sure he got it right, he learned to speak the language.

That isn't to say he simply learned the proper pronunciation of a few choice words or phrases, that would certainly have been more than enough. No, Depp decided the best way to make the role work was to actually learn to speak Vietnamese, and he became almost completely fluent after several months.

Ultimately, his role was cut down significantly, and he barely uttered anything in Vietnamese compared to what he had planned. Despite this, he put more work in to pretending to be able to speak a language than most actors would ever dare, and the audience never knew anything about it.
