“I wanna go home.”

A lone miner, stationed on the moon, yearns for his three-year contract to finish so he can return home to his family. After an accident out on patrol, however, he realises that he’s not the only Sam Bell occupying the moon when he comes face-to-face with his doppelgänger.

Moon stands proud as Duncan Jones’ greatest achievement to date, and boasts one of the best scripts of any science-fiction movie ever made. With little CGI and extravagant futuristic technology, the film manages to focus on the intricate details, illuminating the ethical issues that arise from implementing advanced artificial intelligence.

GERTY (Kevin Spacey), described by Jones as the “Anti-Hal”, is a prominent AI character who elicits periods of emotional intelligence throughout the movie. However, it’s the nature of Sam’s origin that truly questions the potential ramifications of giving consciousness to engineered beings. It’s with the coupling of these two characters that make Moon one of the best Artificial Intelligence movies ever made - especially considering it’s basically a two-hander.

Sam Rockwell is fantastic as the lonely spaceman who just wants to get home to his family, and it’s incredibly difficult to avoid sympathising with him, especially when the true nature of his reality is divulged in one of the great movie reveals of the last decade.
