“Wall-e…”

Pixar once again stood proud as they watched WALL-E take the Oscar for best animated feature. However, the movie - at least on paper - was not a sure thing. The studio took a huge risk on this bleak futuristic representation of earth, as it was a huge step away from their usual style and tone. They even opted to use virtually no dialogue for the first 45 minutes, which must have seemed an insane idea during development, especially considering the obvious usual demographic of Pixar films. However, it did indeed work: So. Damn. Well!

The combination of great visuals, a disturbingly possible representation of the future, and the brilliant anthropomorphic characterisations of WALL-E allow this testament to visual storytelling the popularity it rightly deserves. Thus proving that we can rely on Pixar to venture outside of their comfort zone and continue to produce (hopefully) a plethora of innovative and appealing narratives for years to come.

Fun fact: Director/Writer Andrew Stanton claimed that the central theme supposedly explored how irrational love can defeat anything, even programming (this theme pops up again at number 1).
