8. Professor Quirrell Was After The Philosopher’s Stone - The Philosopher's Stone
Compared with its sequels, the first entry in the Harry Potter series was relatively devoid of plot twists. Yet the final chapter still provided an unexpected development in the form of Professor Quirrell.
Prior to this revelation, Harry, Ron and Hermione had assumed – with good reason – that it was Snape who had been trying to steal the stone. Quirrell, on the other hand, had come across as rather pathetic throughout the story and seemed unlikely to be a villain.
It was to everyone’s surprise, therefore, that Harry found Quirrell standing in front of the Mirror of Erised during the finale of his first year.
As with many of her twists, however, Rowling had sprinkled a number of clues throughout the narrative that indicated the truth, the most obvious of which was that Quirrell had been in Diagon Alley the same day someone had tried to steal the stone from Gringotts.
Still, even the most astute of individuals could never have predicted Quirrell’s true allegiance.
