9. Say Anything

Cameron Crowe's 1989 directorial debut Say Anything tells the story of Lloyd Dobler, a Clash fan and aspiring kick-boxer (the sport of the future) who has a crush on the school valedictorian Diane Court. He manages to convince her to go to a party with him, charms her and keeps her out all night having the time of her life. Despite the fact that she'll soon be England-bound, Lloyd spends the summer falling in love with Diane. At the encouragement of her corrupt father, Diane breaks up with Lloyd before she goes off to college. She gives him a pen, asking him to write her. Lloyd is heart-broken and drives around the city at night in the rain, alone. He talks into a tape-recorder, leaving messages for a friend in which he claims that he gave Diane his heart, and she gave him a pen. The line "the rain on my car is a baptism, the new me, Ice Man, Power Lloyd, my assault on the world begins now" is Lloyd half-talking to his friend via the tape recorder, half-attempting to convince himself that everything will be okay.
