5. Suspiria

A Star Is Born Lady Gaga

When advertising a horror film, the average trailer will show an amalgamation of various overt attempts at scaring the audience into thinking they have to see the film in question. At its worst, this kind of trailer can just wind up feeling like a two-minute reel of all the jump scares in the movie, looking to elicit the easiest and most basic response in the short time-span.

The first teaser trailer for Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria took a decidedly different approach.

Instead of focusing on jump scares or even attempting to convey the narrative of the film, this trailer takes disparate, unconnected shots and edits them together in an entirely avant-garde fashion. This, alongside the choice to layer Thom Yorke's haunting keys and discordant synths over the top of an entirely wordless trailer, creates this practically tangible skin-crawling sensation.

It doesn't try to make you jump like an average horror trailer or even sell you on the story of the film, it instead looks to give you a sense of the sensation of the film and invade your nightmares in a more cerebral way.

With hindsight being 20/20, it also does a remarkable job of priming viewers for the actual film itself between getting them accustomed to this avant-garde style and highlighting snippets of some key thematic moments. In other words, it's a trailer that is actively teaching viewers how to watch the film it is advertising.
