Star Wars: The Force Awakens went out if its way to spark speculation around Rey's origin, giving her a hole-ridden backstory and Force sensitivity for good measure.

She was left on the desert planet of Jakku as a small child, but why and by whom? This is a question The Last Jedi must answer a couple of months from now, and there are several popular schools of thought on the matter.

One theory positions Rey as a descendent of Ben Kenobi, and its more than just the British accent that inspired it. Daisy Ridley's character is skilled in the ways of the Jedi mind trick, and Obi-Wan even calls out to her in that vision.

Furthermore, having Rey, a supposed Kenobi, trained up by Luke Skywalker would mark a reversal of an New Hope's mentor-student relationship, which saw the aged Jedi take the original trilogy's hero under his wing.

Another theory which has gained traction online claims Rey may be a Palpatine, handed a major role in the sequel trilogy to continue the saga's long-running tradition of Skywalker versus Palpatine across the generations.

All will be revealed when The Last Jedi hits cinemas in December.
