5. Female Prisoner: Caged! (1983 - Japan)
Masayo keeps trying to escape from prison but the authorities foil her every bid for freedom. The governor formulates an elaborate revenge plan - to alienate Masayo from her friends and to rape her, a lot. The various day to day running of the prison is also portrayed in the film and it involves a lot of masturbation and sex mad inmates doing anything to relieve the boredom of prison life. In the end, there is a big cliff hanger as to whether Masayo will escape or will the prison staff have their wicked way (again) with her. A nasty WIP (women in prison) from Japan which really stretches the barriers of taste and gratuitousness. Of course they blur pubic hair, but have no compunction in showing young women being raped and copious amounts of semen and blood. Everyone in the film is sex crazed and if you like your exploitation to be sexually perverted, this film could be for you. However, it has a downbeat atmosphere and contains a lot of violence and forced sex. Much stronger than any WIP produced by Jess Franco at the height of his sleaziness, Female Prisoner: Caged! is an exercise designed to shock and appal the viewer. If you are into your WIPs, it is a satisfying film, with Masayo as an excellent heroine who bears all of her problems with grace. If you are a cult movie fan, looking for exotic thrills, the film may satiate your cravings, but be warned! Content is strong.
