10 Exotic Cult Movies From Around The World

4. The Queen Of Black Magic (1983 - Indonesia)

The Queen Of L A couple of Indonesian villagers die in strange ways. The superstitious natives decide it is down to witchcraft, and they turf an innocent woman off a cliff, blaming her for their misfortunes. She miraculously survives the fall and is looked after by an old man, who nurses her back to health. He does happen to be a black magic enthusiast, and he teaches the young woman everything he knows so that she can go back to the village and wreak revenge. Absolutely brilliant Z grade trash from the Far East, if you are in any way a B Movie horror fan or an exploitation fan, you have to check this one out, it will not disappoint. There is a fair amount of gore, but it is so silly you will laugh out loud. The acting is car crash viewing - rendered even more dumb by the terrible dubbing. It has the second best falling off a cliff sequence in exploitation cinema (Lucio Fulci's Don't Torture a Duckling has the best cliff falling sequence with a priest meeting a gory end in a spectacular slow motion sequence). There are flying heads in the film, that is by far and away the best bit - a flying head floating round the village. There are maggoty cadavers and arteries gushing a plenty but there is little nudity or sleaze. However, the film is so daft you can't help but find it endearing. It is just fantastic that films like this are now available on DVD rather than lying neglected and unloved in a cupboard somewhere.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
