Production was doomed from the beginning. You would think a flash flood that almost killed the entire crew would be enough, but that wasn't the half of it. The real tragedy came thanks to the decision to shoot near Nevada desert's above-ground nuclear testing facilities. This meant that cast and crew were exposed to nuclear fallout during the lengthy production, leading to a large number developing cancer and dying young, including Wayne.
