10 Franchises Other Than Star Wars That Will Return... Whether You Like It Or Not

9. Highlander

Can there really only be one? It wouldn't be wise to stake your house on it. There's already been five films and two spin-off series in the franchis but despite some interesting episodes in the Adrian Paul TV show, none have really come close to capturing the spirit of the original. There are few franchises that have flown in the face of established continuity as readily as Highlander, meaning that as far as being a candidate for the reboot treatment it would probably benefit more than most. Recognition of the series has waned somewhat over the years and it exists now as a cult property more than anything else, so it makes sense to start over but it is how such an endeavour is approached that is key to the continued longevity of the property. Knowing that this is the right route to go doesn't entirely inspire hope either: if it is rebooted, like Gremlins, it will more than likely be in a similar fashion to the latest Robocop - packed with new and expansive ideas that add an interesting contemporary flavour but compromise creatively on the darker ingredients that made it such an alluring prospect in the first place. In a story that relies so heavily upon the imagery of head removal, it is easy to see how this approach could reflect badly on Highlander. Nevertheless a reboot of the original property would be far more welcome than another straight-to-video sequel, which only appeals to the few remaining fans of the original TV series.
