Films don't spring up overnight. They take years of creative (or in the case of many blockbusters, financial) decisions and naturally in that time some changes occur. And that's true of everything, from Cannibal Zombies to 2001: A Space Odyssey; cinema's best (and worst) moments didn't just materialise fully formed in a director's mind, they took time to cultivate. Take Up, Pixar's seminal meditation on loss and moving on, masquerading as a family comedy. The entire project was born out of that image of a flying house, but the equally memorable opening montage detailing Carl and Ellie's married life wasn't included until the writers realised a grumpy old man just came across as, well, an unlikeable grump. It's entirely normal for there to be seismic changes in production - Tom Selleck almost played Indiana Jones and Steven Spielberg was originally pegged to direct Interstellar - but you don't expect some of the most important alterations to come when the film is almost finished. And when there are last minutes changes, conventionally it's when things are being removed. Both films in the The Amazing Spider-Man series had some major elements chopped in editing, some for good (Peter's Dad being alive at the end of 2), some for bad (Mary Jane was supposed to be in the sequel, while the first movie was going to wrap up the mystery of the Parkers).
