10 Incredibly Dark Comedies That Dare You To Laugh

4. Four Lions (2010)

Arriving only five years after the 7/7 bombings in London, it's safe to say that a comedy about home-grown terrorists wasn't exactly the most sought-after script in British cinema. But then, if anyone could persuade us to find the 'fun' in Islamic fundamentalism it's provocateur par excellence, Chris Morris. In his hands, a group of aspiring suicide bombers becomes far more amusing than it has any right to be. This is largely because, for all their misplaced idealism, our ragtag radicals are so gloriously inept. For example, after struggling to even put together a video threat, they unwittingly fire a rocket launcher at their own base camp, try to train crows to carry bombs and lose one of their team while lugging explosives across a field. Only Omar (Riz Ahmed), their de facto leader, is knowledgeable and passionate enough to die for their cause; his buddies are too concerned with hiding their beards, blowing up mosques and, erm, Mini Babybels. Darkest Comedy Moment: If Omar openly discussing his plans for martyrdom with his wife and young son doesn't make you feel queasy, then the scene in which the police shoot the wrong man - or rather, shoot a Wookie instead of a Honey Monster- certainly will. Why? It isn't difficult to see it as a response to the real-life tragedy of Jean Charles de Menezes, a Brazilian man who was mistaken for a terror suspect and shot dead by the London Metropolitan police in 2005.
