10 Incredibly Dark Comedies That Dare You To Laugh

5. Super (2010)

Armed with a budget of $2.5 million and a few buckets of blood, director James Gunn grabbed the superhero genre and subjected it to some very bad things indeed. Its story- what if the average Joe suddenly became a superhero?- may sound familiar, but sadsack Frank D'Arbo (Rainn Wilson) is no Peter Parker. After a rather disturbing spot of what he believes to be divine intervention, Frank becomes the Crimson Bolt; crimefighter extraordinaire. Maybe now he'll get the respect he deserves. Maybe now he'll find his true calling. And maybe now he'll win back his wife (Liv Tyler) from sleazeball Jacques (a brilliant Kevin Bacon)... Along the way, he creates a cheap costume, comes up with a catchphrase (''Shut up, crime!'') and bashes a couple of queuejumpers' brains out with a pipe wrench. Don't forget, this guy's the hero. Darkest Comedy Moment: In hindsight, the insanely violent animated intro should've told us that this wasn't a superhero film from the mould of Christopher Nolan. No conflicted alter egos, moral dilemmas and moody rooftop posturing here. Instead, this is the kind of a film where our protagonist is raped by his hyperactive and gleefully sadistic sidekick Boltie (Ellen Page).
